Maize Production

Maize Cultivation Practices

Maize is the most important staple food crop in Tanzania (TZ). It is grown by millions of smallholder farmers across the country, especially in the Southern Highlands and other regions with good rainfall. Farmers plant maize during the main rainy seasons (Msimu or Masika) and sometimes in the short rains (Vuli), mostly using rain-fed methods on about 45% of the country's arable land.Wikipedia

Production has grown strongly in recent years. In the 2023/2024 season, Tanzania harvested a record 12.26 million tons of maize, making it one of the top maize producers in Africa (second or third depending on the year). Most of the crop comes from small farms, which provide food for families and some income when there is surplus. Yields are still relatively low on average, but government support, better seeds, and good weather have helped increase total output. Maize plays a big role in food security, as it forms a large part of daily meals for many Tanzanians.
