RICE IN MOROGORO

RICE IN MOROGORO

RICE CROP YIELD

Rice is a major food and cash crop in Morogoro Region, Tanzania. The region is one of the country's leading rice-producing areas, especially in districts like Kilombero, Mvomero, and Kilosa, where farmers grow paddy in irrigated schemes (such as Mkindo and Kiroka) and rainfed lowlands.

Most rice in Morogoro is produced by smallholder farmers on small plots. Average yields under traditional methods are still relatively low, around 1.5 to 2.5 tons per hectare, though they can reach 3–4 tons/ha or higher with improved practices. In some irrigation schemes using the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), experimental and farmer yields have gone up to 6–9 tons per hectare.

In recent seasons (such as 2022/23), Morogoro contributed significantly to national production, with around 430,000 tons of paddy from the region. Farmers plant during the main rainy season, and irrigation allows better water control and sometimes double cropping. Rice plays a key role in food security and income for many households in Morogoro, though challenges like low fertilizer use, post-harvest losses, and variable rainfall still affect productivity. With better seeds, irrigation, and good management, yields have good potential to increase further.
